HISTORY OF THE TROOP

Troop 1059 was first chartered to Colonial Presbyterian Church, Mohawk District of the Heart of America Council in June, 1954.   A group of men from the Colonial congregation decided to apply for a charter to form a Boy Scout Troop to provide a path on the trail to Eagle for the Webelos graduating from Cub Pack 3059.   Troop 1059 was Charted with approximately 20 boys under the direction of Scoutmaster Whalen Rothenburg.   The membership in the troop grew through the 1950's and 1960's and peaked during the years of Scoutmaster Frederic Miller's leadership when approximately 75 boys were involved in the troop.   During the late 1980's, the membership of the troop stabilized at approximately 30 boys.   The 2010 charter has 77 scouts registered and 89 adults registered.

The early years of the troop contained a strong emphasis on camping and that emphasis is still strong today.   The troop camped monthly at the Lutz Farm in Westline, Missouri.   One of the dads, Nick Kennedy, provided a trailer to store all of the troop's gear.   The patrol method was strongly stressed, as it still is today. Each patrol camped in its own area using two-man pup tents.   Each patrol lashed together its own tables and chairs and posted patrol duty rosters and patrol menus for each night.

During the early years, Troop 59 could be found at summer camp at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation in Camp Lonestar(Wigwam until 1979).     In 1962, Troop 59 moved to Fort Niangua at Camp Frontier, (Now Camp Piercing Arrow) then began camping at Fort leavenworth around 1967, a tradition that continued until 1997 when due to its large numbers, the troop moved to Fort Fremont.   Over the past several years, they have camped at various camp sites at Camp Piercing Arrow (Union & Fremont) and Camp Sawmill (Maple).

Troop 59 has a strong histoty of building Eagles and leaders.   During the 1960's and 1970's, the troop was part of the Old Mohawk District (Renamed Pioneer Trails), which produced more Eagle Scouts per capita than any other district in the nation.   Since 1958 and including the class of 2010, 277 young men have earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 59/459.

During the 1990's, Troop 59 expanded its camping by offering monthly campouts at different destinations with unique programs each month.   Additionally, the Troop has had many high adventure groups visiting all of the major Boy Scout High Adventure Bases including Boundary Waters, OKPIK Winter Camping, Florida Sea Base and Philmont Scout Reservation.

Although the Troop continues its partnership with Colonial Presbyterian Church, the meeting location has changed to the South church campus located at 12501 W 137th street.   In making this move, the Troop had to take a new number designation of 0459 and has joined the Red Tailed Hawk District of the Heart of America Council.   Troop 459 looks forward to a continued long and distinguished parrnership at its new location.

Troop 459 is dedicated to creating an atmosphere where each boy can acquire the skills needed for success in an ever-changing world and can be challenged "to do his best,", to "Be Prepared" follow the Scout Oath, Scout Law and the Eagle Promise.
